Welcome to the Human Prenatal Development (HPD) Unit
Welcome to the Human Prenatal Development unit, part of the LabLearner’s Middle School Faith and Reason Series. This unit provides a unique opportunity for you and your students to explore human life from the moment of conception through the stages of prenatal development—through hands-on lab work, critical thinking, and deep spiritual reflection.
This page is your home base. Each time you return, you’ll be able to reorient, prepare, and proceed with confidence.
Investigation 1: In this Investigation, students will learn how to analyze karyotypes and explore the genetic basis of human development.
Investigation 2: Gamete Formation – In this Investigation, students will examine meiosis and understand how gametes carry genetic information to the next generation.
Investigation 3: Fetal Development – Students explore how the fetus develops and changes during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and how the placenta functions as the interface between the mother and the fetus.
Investigation 4: Third Trimester – In this Investigation, students will learn about the technology that permits health professionals and parents to actually visualize the developing embryo and fetus. You will also examine the properties and important functions of amniotic fluid.
